SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA - In a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 college football season, the No. 24-ranked UNLV Rebels defeated the California Golden Bears 24-13 in the Art of Sport LA Bowl. The Rebels capped an impressive season under interim head coach Del Alexander, earning their first bowl victory since 2000 and finishing the year with an 11-3 record.
Quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams was the driving force behind UNLV’s offense, throwing for two touchdowns and showcasing his composure on the big stage. Running back Kylin James added a pivotal rushing touchdown, while standout wide receiver Jacob De Jesus, who finished with a game-high 125 receiving yards, was named Offensive MVP. On the defensive side, linebacker Jackson Woodard anchored the Rebels’ unit and earned Defensive MVP honors for his dominant performance.
The game began with promise for the Golden Bears, who aimed to secure their first winning season since 2019. Cal jumped out to an early 10-7 lead in the first quarter behind running back Jaydn Ott’s strong ground attack and a 29-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Josiah Martin. However, the Bears’ offense faltered in the second half, failing to score as UNLV’s defense tightened its grip.
The Rebels’ ability to adjust at halftime proved decisive. After allowing early points, UNLV’s defense smothered Cal’s attack, forcing multiple turnovers and limiting their scoring opportunities. The Golden Bears ended their season with a 6-7 record, falling short of their goals despite glimpses of promise throughout the game.
This victory solidifies UNLV’s resurgence as a competitive program, even amidst coaching transitions. The team’s 11-win season and bowl victory set a high bar for the future, giving fans and players alike plenty of reasons to celebrate.
The Art of Sport LA Bowl delivered on its promise of excitement, showcasing rising stars and thrilling plays in front of a packed SoFi Stadium crowd. For UNLV, it was a night to remember—a culmination of grit, determination, and team effort that will resonate for years to come.
